John Napier lived from 1550 until 1617. Napier was a Scottish mathematician, born in Merchiston Castle in Edinburgh, and educated at the University of Saint Andrews. He became a supporter of the Reformation movement in Scotland while still at college, and in later years he took an active part in Protestant political affairs. He wrote A Plaine Discovery of the Whole Revelation of Saint John in 1593, which was the first important Scottish interpretation of the Bible (Bell 526).
Napier is best known as the inventor of the first system of logarithms. AIn 1614 Napier published Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio, in which he explained the nature of his invention. Napier had no notion of logarithms as exponents; in fact the conception of indices other than positive whole numbers was still obscure. To explain his system, Napier had recourse to kinematical considerations@ (Scott, 130). Also, in Napier's ACanonis Descripto, besides giving an account of the nature of logarithms, contains a table of natural sines and their logarithms for every minute of the quadrant, to seven places@......
