A War Defined By Irony “Every war constitutes an irony of situation because its means are so melodramatically disproportionate to its presumed ends” (7). Never is this more accurate than in World War I. Paul Fussell’s book, The Great War and Modern Memory, gives light to innumerable ironies presented in WWI. Fussell believes it is the ironic moments that best stay in ones memory. The ironies Fussell refers to throughout the book range from the broad irony that was World War I and the loss of the so called ‘Idea of Progress’, to the everyday ironies the soldiers faced. Paul Fussell uses the literature from the Great War to demonstrate the irony in the war as well. Using authors who had experienced the war such as Sassoon and Graves; Fussell provides examples to show the powerful affect irony had on the writings generated from the Great War. The Great War was supposed to be the war to end all wars. Most thought it was to be a quick and decisive battle in which glory could be gained.
