notes- The San Andreas Fault The San Andreas fault is located along almost the entire Pacific coast of California, where the Pacific plate meets the North American plate. The plate on the west side is moving north, while the other, on the east side, is moving south, and they are rubbing against each other. Scientists have studied this fault more than any other in the world. On April 18,1906, an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale hit the city of San Francisco, California. The focus, or the beginning point of the earthquake, was 25 miles below the ocean floor, and 150 miles out in the Pacific Ocean. A ship called the John A. Campbell, which weighed 3,000 tons, passed over the focus and jumped 2 feet out of the water. The rip caused by the quake moved toward California at 7,000 miles per hour. It hit the coastline 200 miles north of San Francisco and turned south. The earthquake caused underground gas pipes to break, which set off fires in the city. Electrical wires also snapped, causing more fires. The underground water pipes broke, so the firemen had no way to put out ......
