Nicole Burnell Left Behind
In the film and novel, The Sweet Hereafter, Nicole Burnell was the only survivor of the tragic bus accident that claimed the lives of many children in her small town. Throughout the film, Nicole was heard reading passages from the children's book, The Pied Piper of Hamelin. The story was meant to symbolize how the children had suddenly been taken away from the community and their families. Nicole struggled to understand why she was singled out as the only survivor. She also began to realize how things have changed in her life and in the community.
In the beginning of the film, Nicole was singing on stage at the local fairgrounds. She was portrayed as a beautiful young teenager and a rock star in the eyes of her father, Sam, with whom she had an unsettling, sexually abusive relationship with. She was kind to all the other children in the town and acted motherly toward Billy Ansel's two children who had recently lost their mother. She began reading the Pied Piper to them as a bedtime story.
