The Rural Family of the Bundrens Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Rural Family of the Bundrens William Faulkner does an excellent job bringing the realities of being a southern rural family in the 1930’s to life in his novel As I Lay Dying. This tragic comedy takes place in Mississippi and is narrated by several individuals. By letting different characters tell their point of view, Faulkner allows the reader to gain different perspectives on the events in the novel. This story is about the death of Addie Bundren and her family’s trip to bury her in Jefferson County. This novel shows that, “ The interplay between the Bundrens’ loyalties and selfishness, jealousies and admirations, abilities and disabilities, energy and passivity, secrets and nakedness, guilts, shames and loves results in a journey neither Anse nor any of them could have accomplished as an individual”(Wadlington 35). This family has to overcome many obstacles to fulfill the dying wish of Addie. The Bundrens are very secretive and have underlying motives that drive them to complete this journey.
