Still-Lifes Compared “He was only an eye, but what an eye,” Paul Cézanne’s famous quip about the paintings of Claude Monet makes an interesting comment on the genius and limitations of the man who is arguably the most famous Impressionist painter. While Monet is best known for landscapes, his brief foray into the genre of still-life painting had strong impact on Cézanne, who is known for bringing the genre to new heights of complexity and beauty. The comparison between Monet’s Still Life: Apples and Grapes (1880) and Cézanne’s The Basket of Apples (c. 1895) shows the influence Monet had on Cézanne as well as provides many telling similarities and differences in terms of the physical and stylistic characteristics of the works. Monet and Cézanne were French painters who worked in the late 19th century. While at the time many artists were finding success outside of the French Academy of Fine Arts, the hierarchy of subject matter set by Academy remained.
