The New York City Punk Scene Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Throughout history, many cities had a great impact on the music that emerged from them. Chicago influenced the blues, Seattle influenced grunge, and although New York City influenced many genres of music such as rap, I believe its biggest influence can be found in punk music in the 1970’s. While New York City in general is often a city that brings forth change in many aspects of culture- fashion, art, architecture, - it was most influential to what we now know as punk music in one section in particular, known as The Bowery. The Bowery in the 70’s was the home to bums, drug dealers, and prostitutes, but also to musical geniuses such as Debbie Harry of the group Blondie, and The Ramones. Affected by suburbanization as well as a struggling economy, New York City in the 1970’s was a cheap place to live. This was one of the reasons musicians and artists flocked to it in the first place.
