Why Nikita Khrushchev Deployed Missiles in Cuba Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

On October 16, 1962 the United States found from a series of U-2 reconnaissance flight missions that the Soviet Union had placed medium to intermediate range missiles within communist Cuba, a mere ninety miles away from the United States coast. This finding generated widespread fear in America. The Soviets had now placed weapons of mass destruction with direct hit capacity within proximity of the United States and, for the moment, there was nothing the United States could do about it. Fear of nuclear war and the world coming to an end ran through the American public. In the end, the question remained why would Khrushchev make such a daring move nearly putting the world in the middle of a nuclear war? The Soviet Union had no intention of attacking the United States with the missiles, and installation of the missiles reflected an attempt by Khrushchev to strengthen his position at home and abroad. Nikita Khrushchev made this dangerous deployment decision of medium and intermediate range missiles into Cuba in an effort to deter any future attempt by the United States to invade Cub......
