Dred Scott Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In 1820, the Missouri Compromise kept the balance between the north and the south in the senate. Still, the compromise was only a temporary solution, with the questioning of slavery in the new territories. In 1857, these disputes became clear during the Dred Scott vs. Sanford case which was held in front of the Supreme Court.
In 1832, a physician named John Emerson was hired in Illinois. He brought along his slave, Dred Scott. Scott continued to work as a slave even though it was outlawed in Illinois. Emerson then moved to Wisconsin, where Scott married another slave, Harriet Robinson. They made a family and when Emerson died in 1843, they were sent back to Missouri to work for his wife. Dred attempted to buy their freedom but was denied. In 1846, the Scotts took Mrs. Emerson to court claiming that Dr. Emerson forfeited his rights to owning slaves when he took them to Free states. This case would eventually go to the Supreme Court.
