Alzheimer’s Disease About five percent of the world’s population suffers from some form of dementia (Ritchie 2002). Of this five percent, many people eventually become victim to Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease characterized in the brain by abnormal clumps (amyloid plaques) and tangled bundles of fibers (neurofibrillary tangles) composed of misplaced proteins (Greenfield 2001). Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease can include memory loss, language deterioration, impaired ability to mentally manipulate visual information, poor judgment, confusion, restlessness, and mood swings (Ritchie 2002). Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease and can affect people for over twenty years until death, if not treated (Burns 2002). Until recently, people many felt that Alzheimer’s disease was a "silent killer," meaning that it was very hard to diagnose and treat.
