Candide by Voltaire, just like Virgil’s Aeneid, Homer’s Iliad, and even Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet are stories that are closely related, given the fact that all of them present issues regarding fate versus free will, luck and the accomplishment of ultimate contentment. Luck, many would say is a haphazard phenomenon of chance or fate. Others would say that fate is an alternative name for coincidence or a chance meeting. Even so, many others would say that fate is basically doing what one desires. Nonetheless, the question is, whether these lead or have led to true happiness. In each of the abovementioned stories the achievement of such happiness is obtained through different ways and dissimilar means.
