The Crucible-Character Analysis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

John Proctor Analysis The play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, takes place during the Salem Witch Trials. During this time a group of young girls were said to have seen the devil‘s followers or witches. The girls would then take this accusation to court and the accused witches would be tried and possibly hanged. The ring leader of this group is Abigail Williams, the former maid of John and Elizabeth. Abigail and John had an affair when Elizabeth took sick. John goes through drastic changes throughout the play; from selfish to selfless. John Proctor begins the play as an arrogant, selfish man. He immediately figures out that the whole witch craft scare, in the town, is a hoax created by Abigail. John finds out from Abigail that all the girls were doing in the woods was dancing and her cousin, thought to be possessed, just “took fright is all” (838). John’s cowardice is revealed, despite the fact that he knows none of the accusations are true he stands back and says nothing. The only person he thinks of is himself out of fear for the community learning of his affair with Abiga......
