Amy Whelan April 25, 2004 CT 236-01 Gower Champion Gower Champion was born June 21, 1919 in Geneva, Illinois. His parents were John W. Champion, an advertising executive and Beatrice Carlisle, a dressmaker. His parents divorced while he was young and his mother took him to live in Los Angeles. Here, he attended Fairfax High School, where he studied dance under Ernest Belcher, who would later open the door to Champion’s most influential collaboration. While in high school, he entered a dance contest with his partner Jeanne Tyler. They won. This victory earned them a thirteen-week engagement at the Coconut Grove, and L.A. nightclub. This was enough encouragement to get Jeanne and Gower to drop out of school and try and make it as dancers. After their time at the Coconut Grove was over, the pair traveled to New York, where they danced at the Waldorf- Astoria and Radio City Music Hall “Gower and Jeanne, The World’s Youngest Dancers”.
