QUESTION: To what extent was St. Thomas Aquinas political thought influenced by Aristotle? The Greek philosopher Aristotle (284 -322) was a student of Plato. In 335 BCE Aristotle formed his own school (known as the peripatetic school) of philosophy in Athens as cited by Heywood (1999). According to Peter Nicholson (1995) Aristotle wrote extensively on Science, literature, politics and philosophy. Nicholson (1995) suggests that much of Aristotle's work has been lost. Aristotle's key texts are Eudemian Ethics, Metaphysics, Nicomachaen Ethics and Politics as cited by Boucher & Kelly (2003). According to Heywood (1999) Aristotle's best known political work is the Politics. The politics is an in depth study of political life. Aristotle described politics as "the master science" (Heywood, 1999:69). Nicholson (1995) describes his Politics as an acute and terse analysis of theoretical issues that reflects the shortcomings and ideals of Ancient Greek political life but that also contains valid ideas and arguments for today.
