The Great Gatsby is a novel comprised of several stark contrasts. We see people who are at one stage beautiful and elegant, and in the next breath they become irresponsible and crude. Events, at once jovial celebrations become pathetic. And places which were once revered and high-class, become shadows of their former selves. There is a very obvious dynamic between good and evil, dark and light, morality and immorality throughout The Great Gatsby; we need only to look below the surface, and pay attention to the smaller details to find this out for ourselves.
Jay Gatsbys summer parties are described by Nick as parties at which men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars. They are decadent, glamorous, lavishly catered, and a privilege to be invited to.
