Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a 19th century poet, once said, “There are moments in life, when the heart is so full of emotion, that if by chance it be shaken, or into its depths like a pebble drops some careless word, it overflows, and its secret, spilt on the ground like water, can never be gathered together.” In Act 2 of Shakespeare’s King Lear, Lear’s emotions become shaken, and overflow. He goes through a journey of emotions, from denial, to rage, and finally, isolation. Through the course of the play, King Lear goes through a process of attaining self-knowledge, or true vision of one's self and the world. With this knowledge, he goes through a change of person, much like a caterpillar into a
butterfly. In Act 2 he becomes overwhelmed by emotion, and erupts with both rage and anguish. His emotions become so much for him to endure that he decides to isolate himself, to hide his shame from his daughters.
