In the play An Inspector Calls, J.B.Priestley presents contrasting views between the main characters of the play; Mr. Birling, Mrs. Birling, Sheila, Eric, Gerald and Inspector Goole. Throughout Act Three the social and historical context reflects the time this play was written. Priestley deliberately set his play in 1912 because the date represented an era when all was very different from the time he was writing. In 1912, rigid class and gender boundaries seemed to ensure that nothing would change. Yet by 1945, most of those class and gender divisions had been breached. Priestley wanted to make the most of these changes and did not want the country to go back to this.
Priestley deliberately wrote this play in the year 1945 three decades prior to the time it was set, 1912. This gave him the advantages of being able to use dramatic irony. Also to make it feel as if natural time is elapsing, making the audience feel almost like voyeurs.
