The Killer Spores Exactly one week after September 11, 2001, seven letters containing anthrax were sent to two U.S. senators and five media offices. Twenty-two people contracted infections, and five died as a result of this attack. Those numbers don’t seem large, but it left many Americans wondering about the mysterious mailings, and just how easy it is to take something small and turn it in to something harmful. Many people have yet to realize the impact of this deadly powder. Anthrax could very easily be produced and used as a weapon of mass destruction (Dudley 22). Since the 2001 anthrax attacks, these deadly spores continue to be a major threat to the United States government and the general public. Anthrax is caused by a bacterium called Bacillus anthracis. Casimer-Joseph Davaine, a parasitologist, discovered this bacterium in 1850 when he was examining the blood of an infected sheep. Bacillus anthracis occurs naturally in lower vertebrae animals when they breathe in spores from the soil while grazing. Humans can contract this disease from animals by eating underco......
