In the year 1347, a pandemic disease called plague struck Europe. This plague broke out in one town or city after another and within four to six months it destroyed, according to some estimates, a quarter of the population. This was the worst natural disaster Europe had ever suffered. (Gail, 72) The enormous death toll and the obvious helplessness of authorities to check or even explain the disaster created widespread social disruption and contributed heavily to major changes in European society. The plague ranged from fatalistic resignation to a furious and bloody search for scapegoats, which sadly found its way to the Jews. This plague was known as the Black Death.
The Black Death was a pandemic of a disease; this is when an epidemic covers a wide area. A plague is an infectious fever caused by a bacillus with the scientific name Pasteurella pestis.
