Many mines were created to acquire this resource but the greatest of all these mines is the tower soudan mine located in tower, Minnesota which is just south of Ely, Minnesota. The tower soudan mine is called the Cadillac of underground mines because it is the safest and most comfortable mine without modification.
In 1865 during Minnesotas gold rush iron ore was discovered and put aside due to lack of refining technology. Later in 1880 Charlemagne Tower purchased 20,000 acres of iron ore rich land known as the vermillion iron ore range. In just 2 years he created the Minnesota iron company and had also gained control of the railroads to ship his iron ore to his port in two harbors and hired 100 experienced miners from Michigan.
