The Aztecs The empire of the Aztecs and its capital, Tenochtitlan, flourished in the central valley of Mexico before the arrival of the Spanish in 1519. According to legend the Aztecs left their homeland, Aztlan, around 1100 A.D. They came to the Central Plateau around 1200. They found Tenochtitlan in 1325. Tenochtitlan was on an island in Lake Texcoco where they discovered an eagle perched on a cactus with a serpent in its mouth. Their god, Huitzilopochtli, told them that this symbol would mark the spot for their capital. In 1519, the Aztec empire was ruled by Moctezuma 2. The magnificent island city that Moctezuma 2 ruled was built on a series of artificial islands with canals for streets, towering pyramids and wonderful public buildings. In 1519, the empire had a population of 250,000 people, making it one of the largest urban centers in the world. The city was connected by three causeways.
