The Presidential election of 1828 was between Andrew Jackson of Tennessee and John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts, the incumbent president. John Quincy Adams vice presidential running mate was Robert Rush. John C. Calhoun was the vice-presidential candidate on Andrew Jacksons ticket. Both candidates were in newly formed political parties. Andrew Jackson belonged to the Democrat Republican party, which eventually shortened its name to Democrat. And, John Quincy Adams was a candidate for the National Republican party, which eventually became known as the Republican Party.
Some important issues of the time were the proposition of a national bank, protecting tariffs, and federal appropriations for internal improvements. The two candidates had different planks. However, John Quincy Adams made his better known. On the issue of a national bank, Adams felt strongly for it. Jackson, on the other hand, did not make his plank on this subject known.
