The History of Barbershop Music Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The History of Barbershop Music America, while contributing heavily to music, actually does not have many genres of music to call her own. Jazz and Dixieland are two of the most popular styles of original American music, yet there is another American style that has been very influential in the development of today’s choral productions, and that is barbershop. Traditionally made up of four male voices, one singing the lead and three other voices that sing in harmony with the lead: a tenor, a baritone, and a bass. The lead carries the melody while the tenor sings above him, the bass sings below him, and the baritone actually sings both higher and lower than the lead, yet does not go lower than the bass or higher than the tenor. The harmony of these voices creates a chord that sounds pleasing to the human ear. This is called the barbershop quartet, hence the prefix “quar” meaning four, for the four men in the group and the four-part harmony.
