Berlin: A City Divided Name Class Professor Name Date Berlin, Germany, once a great city, and its people went through years of hardship as a result of the outcome of World War II and the beginning of the Cold War. Germans referred to the immediate aftermath of the war as the “Stunde Null” (zero hour), the point in time when Germany ceased to exist as a state and the rebuilding of the country would begin.(1) The heart of Germany, the capital, Berlin, was demolished by numerous bombing attacks from the British during their air war with Hitler. After the defeat of Hitler, Berlin was divided into four sections by the last remaining super powers and allies. On one side was the Soviet Union. On the other were the allies, the United States, France, and Great Britain. To understand how such a thing could ever happen, one must have a little background on how the city and country got to this point.
