The Jungle A. Please explain the title, including Social Darwinism. The title, The Jungle, is an allegory to the wildlife of the middle-of-city living in Chicago back in the early 1900s. Everyone back then was out to help themselves and make themselves out to be better than everyone else, trying to get ahead was the important thing back then. Many people came from the “Old Country” and were looking to live the American Dream. Although, it was very difficult because work was plentiful, although very dangerous. Social Darwinism refers to the survival of the fittest feeling for the wildlife. Whoever is stronger will live longer is what is believed. So therefore, this means whoever is on the top of the social pyramid will live longer, and those on the bottom will die. All of the immigrants would of course be on the bottom, and on the top would the be the bosses of the big businesses. B. How does Sinclair present the political system? Very prejudicial.
