War in the Pacific- Island Hopping
Most of WWII was fought in Europe, however, towards the end of the war, the Pacific became an important place for battles to occur and resolve conflicts. The U.S. fought many battles in order to eventually obtain their goal of getting to the mainland of Japan. WWII consisted of a variety of battles through the war, and many took place in the Pacific Ocean. The concept of jumping from island to island to get closer to the mainland of Japan was know as island hopping.
Once Pearl Harbor was struck in December 1941 America joined World War II and began to conquer a vast amount of islands in the Pacific. At that time Roosevelts idea was that he would have Douglas Macarthur who was a general for American and Filipino troops seize less-well-fortified islands, and use them to build airfields. America battle of the war was in August 1942 in Guadalcanal, which is in the Solomon Islands. After months of fighting the Japanese finally gave up and by that time it was called the Island of Death.
